If you are anything like me, you probably found yourself focusing on food and snacking more during lockdown. Perhaps you were stress eating or comforting yourself with food and drink or perhaps it was used as entertainment. Under the challenging circumstances, it was also something that we could be in control of and enjoy, in a situation we had no control over.

When you look back, perhaps you were working from home for the first time or home schooling your kids or just bored or had health anxiety and let’s face it, food and perhaps those extra drinks got you through a very tough time.I always say to my weight loss clients, when I hear them say how they ate and drank so much during lockdown, not to beat themselves up about it; to instead thank their subconscious mind for finding a way to get through it and staying relatively mentally healthy. But now it time to move on from that stage and get back to their normal healthy way of being and naturally become their ideal healthy size.

Easier said than done for some people, as eating and drinking, lockdown style became their now daily habits. It may take some effort to change those ways, so here are some tips that can help you get back on track.

  • Make Monday to Thursday your alcohol free days by having alcohol free drinks readily available. Find another way to unwind at the end of the day like having a pot of tea or a sparkling water.
  • Don’t have chocolate and treats in the house and if you do have them for the kids put them out of sight and they will be out of mind. If you see those shiny packets you will be triggered and you won’t choose the apple over the chocolate.
  • Use a smaller plate for meals so it will be easier to control portion sizes that way.
  • Tell yourself that you no longer need fat on your body to keep you safe…I know it can sound a bit woo-woo, but if you are in a stressful situation for long enough your metabolism will slow down to keep you safe…and it will be harder to shed those excess kilos. Just close your eyes and tell yourself you no longer need the weight to protect you…you can let it go now.
